A noisy refrigerator is the worst. If the refrigerator in your home is a little louder than it usually is there are a few easy place that you can check while attempting to find the cause. There are a lot of fans on a home refrigerator that might create strange noises. The appliance could also not be level too. Or you could have a compressor wearing out. If your refrigerator is a lot louder when the ice maker is making ice, the sounds could be a broken a water valve.

There are some obvious components that must be be checked. Like is your refrigerator filled too full? A refrigerator that’s too might result in glass containers and other items to clink together. This will cause a lot of annoying sounds inside of the refrigerator that is not ideal because the refrigerator is running and producing a minor vibration.

If you own a model of refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but do not have the water hooked up, be sure you shut off the water dispenser and ice maker. There’s typically a button on the water dispenser on the refrigerator that can be pressed to turn off the dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you need to lift the metal bar. If the refrigerator was installed near a wall in the kitchen, it could cause the standard operating noise to seem louder. This is due to the echo of the sound of the appliance. Move it out a bit away from the wall and then see if that helps or not. A refrigerator needs to be about 2 inches away from the back wall to lower the sound.

If it is not one of these basic and easy fixes, it’s time to dive on in. The majority of the time, the refrigerator fans are the reason for a loud refrigerator. There are fan blades that can get dirty and clogged. There are times the fan motors do too. There’s a condenser fan and an evaporator on refrigerators too. Often times the refrigerator condenser fan gets a coating of dust on it and needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. If the dust builds up and gets too heavy it will sometimes wear out the bearings inside the fan’s motor.

Clean the Fan & Refrigerator Condenser Coils

First, the refrigerator. Most of the time you will need to have a wrench or screwdriver to remove the back panel from the refrigerator. As soon as it is off you will see a fan in there. If it is full of dirt and dust, grab a rag and gently wipe it off. While you’re in there look at the coils as well. These are typically near there and will be covered in the same dust and grime that the fan is. Cleaning the coils only takes a few minutes but it will help the refrigerator run more efficiently. This is actually a common problem that causes a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades in the refrigerator. Do they spin easily? If they do not the fan motor bearings are not working. This is a simple repair, as the fan assembly is typically a unit that can be ordered and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. But, before attempting this, ensure the refrigerator is not plugged in. Do the same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is located behind the freezer. This isn’t usually the problem, as this particular fan is protected by being inside the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the noises are coming from the top of the appliance that is the area to check.

If you think it could be the refrigerator compressor, the large, typically gray or black object under the refrigerator near the coils, we advise calling Santa Clarita Appliance Repair ASAP. That isn’t a repair a homeowner should proceed with.
